The Italian Consulate General has implemented a new appointment system for the Italian citizenship recognition process. Starting at midnight this Friday, February 3rd, applicants must express their interest through [the relevant platform/method]. Prenota@mi.
For a change, the new form of scheduling – created to “make more efficient” the service, according to the consulate – is not working.
When trying to use the improvised service, the citizen will come across the phrase: “An error occurred while processing your order”.

The same mistake happens for those who want to book an appointment to obtain an Italian passport.
Despite seeming like a technological evolution, the new scheduling service through Prenota@mi it is illegal.
According to the article 53, number 5, of Presidential Decree 445/2000 TU, published on December 28, 2000, All documents received or sent by an Italian public administration are absolutely subject to protocol registration.
The Law specifies that the administrative document is any representation, whatever the form, of the content of acts, including internal ones, of public administrations or, in any case, used for the purposes of administrative activity.
Citizens can seek their rights in court
The scheduling system via Prenota@mi, adopted by the consulates of Curitiba and Rio de Janeiro, works like a virtual lottery. The few vacancies available are filled mainly by companies specializing in scheduling.
For Reginaldo Maia, from Blessed Citizenship, Citizens can seek their rights in court in the absence of a protocol.
“The law says that all requests made to the public administration, which includes consulates, are subject to mandatory registration. In other words, the citizen has the right to the protocol number. When this does not happen, he can seek his right in court”, says the consultant.
According to him, the consulates need to be punished for the illegality they commit. “Being on the consulate waiting list is the only guarantee in case of a possible change to the Italian citizenship law or a rule. It's the argument of acquired rights. And when a citizen doesn't have a letter of intent, naturally they are disadvantaged,” he concludes.
