O Consulate General of Italy in São Paulo released impressive figures for 2024. The total number of people registered in AIRE (Register of Italians Living Abroad) rose from 345 to almost 383, an increase of 11%.
During the year, 79 thousand practices related to AIRE were processed, with 44 thousand new registrations, surpassing the 42.375 from the previous year.
According to the agency, the waiting time for citizenship recognition has fallen from 10 to 7 years.
Records and advances
The passport sector issued 38.695 documents, 15% more than in 2023, maintaining São Paulo as the second largest consulate in the world in terms of number of issuances.
In addition, 13 marital status practices were analyzed, an increase of a thousand cases compared to the previous year.
Other services, such as notarial acts and declarations of value, grew by 20%. In the visa sector, the increase was 25% compared to 2023. Despite the high demand, the consulate highlighted that the team structure remains the same.
“Thanks to the commitment and dedication of the entire team, our Consulate continues to improve processes, with an unchanged organic structure, even in the face of high demand and growing challenges,” says the note in Instagram profile.
Reactions and challenges
Users praised the numbers, but pointed out difficulties in customer service. Comments on Instagram mentioned the difficulty scheduling services, such as passports.
"Another 44 who won't be able to schedule their passport appointment! Congratulations," one internet user ironically commented, referring to the new AIRE registrants. Another commented: "I have more hope of winning the Mega-Sena lottery than of managing to schedule a passport appointment at that consulate."
Others highlighted the need for greater transparency. “It would be interesting to have monthly transparency, so we can really know what works and what doesn’t. Marketing is easy to do, but it’s hard to feel the good experience at the end,” wrote one follower.
The consulate said the results reflect the team’s dedication and commitment to strengthening ties between Brazil and Italy. However, many citizens feel that there are still significant challenges in providing services, especially in high-demand areas such as passports and citizenship.
