Milonga olive oil, produced in Triunfo (RS), was voted one of the best in the world in the EVO IOOC Italy 2022. The competition, which was founded in 2016 to evaluate samples from manufacturers that can guarantee the traceability of the ingredient, released the results last Saturday (21).

The product from Rio Grande do Sul — extracted from crops of the Arbequina varietal, of Spanish origin — debuted this year in the competition and was considered the best in the Southern Hemisphere. The rules of the competition prevent olive oils from different hemispheres from competing against each other.

Aristides Inácio Vogt, partner at Celebra Alimentos, a family company that produces lamb and has also been involved in olive farming for 6 years, explains that the first olive oil harvest was in 2021 and was sold locally due to its small volume.

“The 2022 harvest yielded 3.000 liters and, for climate reasons, I knew we could produce very high quality olive oil,” says the producer.

Medals

In addition to the top prize for a Brazilian olive oil, Milonga received gold medals for the Arbequina and Coratina blend and silver medals for the Greek Koroneiki olive label.

“The result reflects a new world view on Brazilian olive oils“, adds Vogt.

Each bottle (250 milliliters) costs R$45 on the brand's website. In physical stores, the product can only be found in Porto Alegre, at Armazém dos Importados (Rua Padre Chagas, 167, Moinhos de Vento) and at Banca 43 (Mercado Público de Porto Alegre and Rua Carlos Trein Filho, 1100, Bela Vista) .

Other highlights

Four other Brazilian olive oils, two from São Paulo and two from Rio Grande do Sul, caught the attention of the judges. Sabiá Arbequina, from Santo Antônio do Pinhal (SP), which was among the ten best in the world in the Spanish Evooleum competition, left EVO IOOC Italy 2022 as the best in South America.

Produced by Orfeu in São Sebastião da Grama (SP), Picual won the title of best in Brazil. Considering monovarietal products from the Southern Hemisphere, Lagar H, from Cachoeira do Sul (RS), was champion with Arbequina.

Mixture of Arbequina and Arbosana, the blend from Casa Gabriel Rodrigues, in São Gabriel (RS), had its sensory notes recognized in the “Best International Coupage” category.
