The vice-governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Gabriel Souza, and the consul general of Italy in Porto Alegre, Valerio Caruso, inaugurated the celebrations of the 150 years of Italian immigration in the state. The ceremony was held in Bento Gonçalves.
The event was attended by government officials, members of the Legislative Assembly and representatives of the Italian community. During the event, the official calendar of events for 2025, a portal dedicated to the initiative and the official logo of the celebrations.
Cultural and economic importance
In his speech, Valerio Caruso highlighted the historical significance of the anniversary. According to him, the celebration is an opportunity to value Italian culture in a state where around 40% of the population has Italian ancestry. Caruso also highlighted the need for initiatives that stimulate economic recovery after the floods that hit the state in May 2024.
Gabriel Souza, in turn, thanked the consul for his work in strengthening ties between Brazil and Italy. He recalled the historic visit of Italian President Sergio Mattarella to Porto Alegre, a moment that reinforced solidarity and opened new opportunities for cooperation between the state and Italy.
