O Pope Leo XIV appointed this Monday (30) the Brazilian climatologist Carlos Nobre as a member of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development. The researcher from the University of São Paulo (USP) will join the advisory body focused on central issues of human existence.
Nobre is a world reference in global warming and has been studying the Amazon region for over 40 years. The scientist worked for more than three decades at the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) and is a member of the Planetary Guardians group.
In 2007, the Brazilian was part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) research team that received the Nobel Peace Prize. The group was awarded the prize alongside former US Vice President Al Gore for their warnings about environmental risks.
Currently, Nobre serves as a senior scientist at the Institute for Advanced Studies at USP. The Brazilian's appointment occurred in conjunction with the selection of other members for the dicastery, including religious and academic leaders from Mexico, Congo, Peru, the United States, and Kenya.
Among the new advisors are Archbishop Rogelio Cabrera López of Monterrey and theologian Meghan J. Clark of St. John's University. The list also includes experts in ethics, psychology, and migration from various international institutions.
Almost a year after the death of Pope FrancisLeo XIV also defined changes in strategic positions within the Roman Curia. The Italian Monsignor Paolo Rudelli is the new Substitute for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State.
Rudelli had held the post of Apostolic Nuncio in Colombia since 2023. He takes over from Venezuelan Edgar Peña Parra, who was appointed as the new Apostolic Nuncio to Italy and the Republic of San Marino.
