While Italy discusses, ideologically, stricter rules in recognizing citizenship, Portugal follows a practical and technological approach.
The Portuguese government has implemented a new digital platform with artificial intelligence (AI) to speed up the processing of citizenship applications, aiming to increase efficiency and reduce long waiting times.
The initiative promises to alleviate the overload of processes, especially for the thousands of Brazilians waiting in line, significantly improving service capacity.
Automation and AI to speed up processes and reduce fraud
On Tuesday, October 1, Portugal launched a new digital platform that uses AI to simplify citizenship applications. This change aims to address the labor shortage and the high volume of processes affecting thousands of foreigners, mainly Brazilians, at the Institute of Registries and Notaries (IRN).
With automation and artificial intelligence tools, the platform promises to drastically reduce processing time. IRN estimates that, with the digitalization of documents and automatic data extraction, the initial service time will drop from 2 hours to 1h13m, transforming what was previously a lengthy process into something more agile.
In addition to shortening deadlines, the digitalization of orders aims to combat fraud, ensuring greater accuracy in document verification and automating the classification of processes by type of order.
Now, the service process will be as follows:
- Automatically classify the process according to the type of request.
- Scan the documents presented upon receipt of the order.
- Extract identification data with artificial intelligence.
- Automatically insert into the system.
The president of IRN, Filomena Rosa, said the changes could increase service capacity by 50%, helping to deal with the growing demand for requests.
