Paula Toller: national rock muse is the great-granddaughter of Trentinos

The singer Paula toller, lead singer of the Brazilian pop rock band Kid Bee for more than 30 years, is another Brazilian personality with Italian origin.

Paula is the great-granddaughter of Giacinto Toller, born on February 27, 1884 in the city of Segonzano, in the province of Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige region, Italy.

His great-grandfather came to Brazil at the end of the 19th century, the time of the great immigration flow of people from Italy looking for better working conditions in South America. In this case, he emigrated from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, with Austrian nationality, having been born in a region that has belonged to Italy since 1918.

In Brazil, Paula's great-grandfather became known as Jacinto (or Jacintho) and married in Rio de Janeiro, in 1905, with São Paulo native Margarida Vaz.

Paula was born in Rio de Janeiro in August 23th, 1962, daughter of Luis Paulo Amora Toller and Laureana Toller. However, the singer did not live well with her mother, Laureana Toller, who left the family when Paula was still a child.

Thus, the artist was raised by her paternal grandparents, Paulo Maurício de Andrade Amora, retired surgeon, former advisor to the Presidency of the Republic and the Government of the State of Guanabara, historian and author of several books, and Renee, housewife and manager of a boarding house for elderly women.

At the age of 17, Paula entered the Industrial Design and Visual Communication course at Pontifical Catholic University (PUC) of Rio de Janeiro.

However, his destiny as an artist was set and gained momentum at the beginning of decade 1980, when she was in her bedroom and, in the living room, her grandparents were watching television.

In an interview, she said she heard an interesting sound and ran into the room, where she saw the group Gang 90 and the Absurdettes singing “Perdidos na Selva” at a Rede Globo festival. It was the trigger for him to be sure of his professional choice.

In 1981, Paula Toller met Leoni at college, both colleagues at PUC-Rio and the two started dating. That's how she started attending rehearsals at Chrisma band, formed by Leoni (vocals and electric bass), Beni Borja (drums) and Pedro Farah (guitar).

After much insistence that she join the band, invitations that she refused saying she was shy, Paula finally accepted the challenge. Then the saxophonist George Israel joined the group, which was renamed Kid Bee and the Wild Pumpkins, name chosen during live broadcast on Fluminense FM Radio.

The band's first demo, featuring the song Distraction, was performed on the now-defunct radio station. The success was immediate and the group started to perform at flying circus. That's how they got on the album Rock Voador, with the songs Distraction and Vida de Cão é Chato pra Cachorro.

Then, Pedro Farah left to live in the United States and Bruno Fortunato took over Kid's guitar permanently. Beni, who would later be the producer of the Rio band Cavadão bikini, was the second member to leave Kid Abelha, being replaced by hired drummers.

Success in the 80s

In 1984, Paula Toller left university, shortly before graduating, to dedicate herself to composing and singing with Kid Abelha, who was beginning to be successful. The band's first single, Intimate Painting, which had been released in 1983, sold more than 100.000 copies, driven by the hit Why Not Me?.

In the following years, the group accumulated successes, such as Fixation, As I Want, Alice Don't Write Me That Love Letter, In your place, I Had a Dream, I Love You Forever, I Only Think About You, Me Against the Night, Tears and Rain, Nada Sei, In the Middle of the Street, Tomorrow Is 23 and Grand' Hotel.

Among the highlights of the group's career are participation in the first edition of Rock in Rio, in 1985, where the band sang for more than 50 thousand people in one night and for 250 thousand people in their second performance.

The group split amicably in 2013, but only made the official announcement em April 23th 2016, on their social networks, claiming “natural wear and tear” and “desire for other ways of creating”.
