Martin Charles Scorsese was born in November 17th, 1942, in the Flushing neighborhood, Queens, New York. Created in Little Italy, direct descendant of Italians from Sicily on both parents' sides.
Your father, Luciano Charles Scorsese (1913–1993), the son of immigrants from Polizzi Generosa, worked as an ironer and occasionally acted in films. His mother, Catherine Cappa Scorsese (1912–1997), born in Ciminna, was a seamstress and occasional actress, famous for participating in her son's productions.

Everything about Martin’s childhood was steeped in Italian-American values: large family, community ties, and culinary traditions. He suffered from asthma from an early age, which limited his participation in physical activities. This led him to discover cinema, with frequent visits to local theaters with his parents.
Career and contributions to Italian culture
Studied cinema at New York University, starting his career with Who's That Knocking at My Door (1967). In the 1970s, he established himself with classics such as Mean Streets (1973) and Taxi Driver (1976), establishing his mark on modern cinema.

Scorsese won the Oscar for Best Director on The Departed (2007), as well as Emmy, BAFTA and Grammy. He is an advisor to institutions such as the National Italian American Foundation, regularly celebrating its cultural heritage.

Relationship with Italian cinema
In 1999, he directed the personal documentary My Voyage to Italy (My trip to Italy), an immersion into Italian neorealism and directors such as De Sica, Rossellini, Fellini and Visconti. The film was screened out of competition at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival.
In his work, Scorsese explores Italian culture not only as an emotional memory, but also as an aesthetic influence. According to him, his native Sicily “has something severe and strong”, present both in his urban narratives and in the values that permeate his characters.

Cultural legacy and inspiration
Scorsese’s legacy is reflected in the valorization of Italian-American identity — a fusion of childhood memories, family traditions, religious and cinematic references. He says that Italian cinema was an integral part of his formation: “The movies weren’t just movies; they were the air you breathe, what you eat.”
In his productions, he rescues the experience of the diaspora, the duality between America and Sicily, and reinterprets universal themes through a unique cultural lens.
