Two pages from the first edition of the “Divine Comedy”, a masterpiece by Italian poet Dante Alighieri, were found during transfer work at the State Archives in La Spezia, in the Liguria region.

According to the city's mayor, Pierluigi Peracchini, these are “two authentic pages of songs from Purgatory and Paradise”.

“The discovery of a treasure of inestimable value is an extraordinary fact. We now intend to work with the Ministry of Culture on a path for an exhibition,” he added.

The Divine Comedy was written in the 14th century and tells the story of Dante Alighieri's journey through Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. In the first two, he is guided by the Roman poet Virgil; in the third, by the muse Beatrice.

The work is considered to be the founder of the modern Italian language and one of the country's greatest cultural symbols. (HANDLE)
