Priest calls pope a heretic for talking about gay marriage: “he must be converted”

Pope Francis, greatest leader of the Catholic Church, was called “heretic who must be converted”, due to a statement about civil unions between people of the same sex. The owner of the statements, however, is a priest from Italy, Dom Fabio Ragusa, vicar of the Italian city of Borgio Verezzi, in the Liguria region.

Dom Fabio Ragusa

At mass on the 1st, Ragusa called the pope “unworthy, heretical and in need of conversion”.

The faithful of the church, at the morning mass, did not care about the statements. But at the evening mass, there were people who left the church and made complaints to another leadership. There were those who declared that “they would not return to church if Ragusa celebrated mass”.

“I received an avalanche of messages from the faithful about what had happened in the morning and I was afraid it would happen again. Some faithful were crying on the phone, others told me that they would no longer go to church if Monsignor Ragusa celebrated Mass,” said priest Joy Thottamkara.

In light of the statements, Dom Fabio Ragusa ended up suspended by the bishop of the region, Monsignor Guglielmo Borghetti.

Understand the controversy

In the documentary “Francesco”, released last week, Jorge Bergoglio – at the time he was archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina – made statements about civil unions between people of the same sex.

For him, “homosexual people have the right to be part of a family, they are children of God, they have the right to a family” and cited Argentine legislation on the subject.

Last Monday (02), the Vatican issued an official note stating that the pope's statements were taken out of context and did not signal a change in the church's doctrine.
