Regular or not, the number of foreign citizens has grown again in Italy. Italy seems destined to undergo changes both in social composition as well as on the cultural front.
On the tricolor terrain, Muslim foreigners increased, while those of Christian faith decreased. Specifically, Muslim representation amounts to more than 29% of citizens from other countries.

Muslims in Italy are increasing
Taking into account the religious affiliation of even minors of any age, the estimates contained in the report of Italian Caritas indicate that Muslim foreign citizens residing in Italy (as of January 1, 2022) are 1,5 million, or 29,5 % of the total among foreigners.
The number is also aumentando compared to last year, when the faithful of Allah there were less than 1,4 million (27,1% of the total).
These are mainly Moroccan citizens, Albanians, Bangladeshis, Pakistanis, Senegalese, Egyptians and Tunisians.
On the other hand, Christian foreigners in Italy have fallen, now down to 2,8 million compared to almost 2,9 million last year. Although from 56,2% to 53,0% of the total, Christians are still the absolute majority of the foreign presence residing in Italy.
Specifically, among Christians, the orthodox component represents 28,9% of the total. They are mainly citizens of Romania.
Catholics represent the second most important confession: around 892.000 people (17,2% of foreign citizens in national territory), compared to 866.000 a year ago.
These are mainly citizens of the Philippines, Albania, Poland, Peru, Ecuador and Brazil.
5 million immigrants
According to the report by Cáritas and the Migrantes Foundation, citizens regular foreigners increased in Italy.
Data from January 1, 2022 shows 5.193.669 foreign citizens with legal residence, a number that marks a recovery compared to last year.
In the first five regions of residence, the primacy of foreign presences comes from Lombardy, followed by Lazio, Emilia-Romagna and Veneto, while Tuscany surpasses Piedmont in 5th place.
The table of nationalities remains substantially unchanged: among residents, the Romanians (around 1.080.000 citizens, 20,8% of the total), followed, in order, by the Albanians (8,4%), Moroccans (8,3%), Chinese (6,4%) and Ukrainians (4,6. XNUMX%).
