The Italian ambassador to Brazil, Alexander Cortese, expressed this Friday (3) its closeness and solidarity with the authorities and the population of Rio Grande do Sul, a state severely affected by storms since the beginning of the week.
The region, with a large number of Italian immigration, was hit by a serious natural disaster that has left at least 32 people dead, dozens injured and missing, as well as thousands of people homeless.
"I am following, with great apprehension and emotion, and in constant contact with the Consulate General in Porto Alegre, the tragic news coming from Rio Grande do Sul," Cortese stated in a note.
The diplomat also highlighted that the Brazilian state is “a wonderful land”, which he had “the pleasure of visiting a few weeks ago and to which Italy is very linked, due to the indissoluble historical, linguistic and traditional ties, thanks to an Italian community -Brazilian who, over the last 150 years, has made – and continues to make – a fundamental contribution to the growth of Rio Grande do Sul society”.
According to a statement, “the Consulate General in Porto Alegre, in cooperation with local civil protection, started a campaign to collect donations of basic necessities at its headquarters, at Rua José de Alencar 313, to allocate to flood victims”.
In addition, an emergency number was made available for any need (0055 51 981871503). (Handle)
