The government led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced, this Wednesday (16), that it gave its consent, a term known as “agrément” in diplomatic language, to the appointment of the new Italian ambassador to Brazil.

The Italian government's choice to succeed the diplomat Francis Azzarello fell to Alessandro Cortese.

“The Brazilian government has the honor to announce that it has granted approval to Mr. Alessandro Cortese as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the Italian Republic in Brazil”, stated the official statement.

Cortese holds a law degree from the University of Rome, is married, and has one son. His professional career is marked by holding various diplomatic positions: Head of the Commercial Office of the Italian Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa; Advisor on the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) at the Permanent Mission of Italy to the European Union; Deputy Head of Mission of the Italian Embassy in Ottawa, Canada; Diplomatic Advisor to the President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament; Permanent Representative to the EU Political and Security Committee; and Coordinator of the Italian presidency of the OSCE in 2018.
