The Italian government on Tuesday (4) called for “dialogue” with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to avoid an imminent tariff increase on goods from the European Union.
“The West needs to unite, not divide, with a shared energy, industrial and trade policy capable of responding assertively to the challenges of other global players,” said the Minister of Business and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, at an EU ministerial meeting in Warsaw, Poland.
“The EU must immediately engage in constructive dialogue with Washington to build new strategic cooperation. We must avoid a trade war that would be devastating for all of us,” he added.
Trump has threatened to raise import tariffs on European goods to force the bloc to buy more American products and reduce the US trade deficit with the EU, which is around $200 billion a year.
“We cannot divide the West while we face Russia’s war in Ukraine and China’s competitive challenge,” Urso warned, adding that Trump’s “truce” with Canada and Mexico proves that dialogue “is possible.”
“Showing off muscles is harmful to everyone, dialogue is necessary. Trump has shown himself to be a great negotiator,” reinforced the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister, Antonio Tajani, at an event in Milan.
