The Italian Consulate General in Porto Alegre received a special visitor this week.
The lady Orphila DemariA 98-year-old woman went to the consular office to obtain her Italian passport. The reason for her trip touched the staff and went viral on social media: to visit her great-grandchildren who live abroad.
The scene was recorded by the consulate itself, which published it in its official profile a photo of the elderly woman accompanied by the caption: "Today our Consulate had the honor of receiving Mrs. Orphila Demari, 98 years old, who came to get her passport with her smile and energy!"
According to the agency, the act represents "a true testament to the vitality, memory, and love for Italy." The post, illustrated with emojis and words of encouragement, received dozens of comments—including praise, humor, and veiled criticism of the slowness of consular processes.
Reactions on social media
In the comments, netizens praised the consulate's attitude and the woman's willingness. "Health, long life, and a great trip to Dona Orphila!" wrote one follower. "This is Mr. Consul valuing people," commented another.
Others preferred to make light of the long waits common in Italian citizenship procedures. “Congratulations! I hope you don’t have to wait another 32 years for mine… until you’re 98 years old,” said one user. Another wrote: “Poor thing, she joined the queue when she was 20.”
There were also those who highlighted the emotional bond with Italy: “The love we have for our ancestors never ends,” said one follower, using the Brazilian and Italian flags.
Despite the mix of criticism and celebration, the image of the elderly woman gained prominence as a symbol of persistence and family connection between generations of the Italian-Brazilian community.
