Florence, Milan and Bologna top a ranking by the Italian National Institute of Statistics (Istat) that assessed the quality of life in 14 metropolitan regions from north to south in the country.

The capitals of Tuscany, Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna stood out with more than 75% of the indicators above the national average, in addition to obtaining high values in innovation, research and creativity and quality of services.

Other northern cities that also scored well in the same categories are Turin (72,6%), in Piedmont; Genoa (67,7%), in Liguria and Venice (59,7%), in Veneto.

Of the 11 sectors evaluated, quality of services achieved the highest score in metropolitan cities across the country. “Environment” had the worst score, with two-thirds of participating municipalities below the national average.

The Istat report also revealed some disparities between cities in the central-north and southern regions, especially in income and education.
