The municipality of Monte Belo do Sul is preparing to experience an unforgettable March, full of celebratory events that mark its 33 years of emancipation and celebrate the 150 years of Italian immigration to Rio Grande do Sul. “It is a way for us to pay tribute to the legacy of the colonizers, on which the identity of Monte Belo do Sul is based, from the economy to gastronomy, including architecture and culture,” highlights the Secretary of Tourism and Culture, Alvaro Manzoni.
Emancipated from Bento Gonçalves on March 20, 1992, Monte Belo do Sul has its origins linked to the arrival of Italian immigrants in 1877, coming from Udine, Mantova, Cremona, Venice, Vicenza, Treviso, Bergamo, Modena and Belluno. The municipality stands out for its wine production, being the largest producer of fine grapes per capita in Latin America.
Festive Programming
The celebrations begin on March 08th (Saturday) with an Italian Singing Meeting at the Main Church, followed by a Ragazzi dei Monti dinner and dance at the Sociedade 24 de Maio. On Sunday (March 09th), one of the most anticipated moments takes place, with the giant polenta falling, a scenic parade and collective grape stomping, all accompanied by typical wine and food and cultural attractions.
The event will integrate, in a single day, the traditions of Polentaço, the Opening of the Grape Harvest Festival, and the Vieni Vivere la Vita Festival, also celebrating 150 years of Italian immigration. The festival will take place at Praça Padre José Ferlin, from 10:30 am to 19 pm, with free admission and a program full of music and dance performances.
The event will be held next to the São Francisco de Assis Parish Church, one of Monte Belo do Sul's landmarks. The space will feature restaurants, wineries and agribusinesses, allowing visitors to experience the authentic Italian culture present in the municipality.
Visitors will be able to participate in the collective grape treading, considered the largest in the world, where the fruits are crushed to extract the juice, reliving the early days of winemaking in the region. They will also be able to watch the preparation of giant polenta, made in an 800-kilo pot. The highlight will be the tumbling of the polenta, followed by its free distribution to the public.
The scenic parade also promises to thrill the public, featuring floats that represent the customs and traditions of Italian immigrants. In addition, Italian, German, Polish and Gaucho dance groups will have space to showcase their art and value the city's cultural identity.
Programming in the Interior
The festivities will not be limited to the city center. On March 15, Monte Belo do Sul will host the Carranca Custom Fest, a custom motorcycle event with rock and country shows, with the main attraction being the band Garotos da Rua.
On March 16, the community lunch will take place at the São José Community. On March 22, the Santo Antônio Community will host the Sparkling Wine Dinner, with a show by Andri & Hector and Band. To close the festivities, on March 28 and 29, the Santo Isidoro Community will host the Giardino Vêneto, an event that combines wine and food with an international show by the band Star Beatles.
