Dear,

The article published by this portal on January 15, 2022 “Italian passport at the Porto Alegre consulate only in 2023”, needs some clarifications, because the explanation provided by the published article does not correspond to reality and can be interpreted incorrectly, providing an untrue image of the large and complex daily work of the operators of this Consular Headquarters.

The Consulate General of Italy in Porto Alegre informs that the vacancies available in 2023 represent the “normal” line of countless people who need to renew or issue their first Italian passport, but who currently do not need to travel and, therefore, have no reason urgently to issue a new passport.

To meet the demands of users, this Consulate General has long adopted a specific procedure for applicants who need to travel and who, at the time of scheduling, prove that the Italian passport is necessary for emergency reasons such as studies, work and medical treatment. health or even, as recently established by the Italian Authorities, to travel to Italy for tourism with a ticket already issued.

In this case, the interested party will be booked immediately and will have their passport issued on the spot, naturally within the period necessary to be able to travel with the document in hand (we recommend checking on the Consulate's website all the documentation that must be presented for the issuance of the passport Italian and we also inform that the passport is a travel document and that it is the applicants' responsibility to check the rules and possible restrictions for entering the country of destination).

We emphasize that all those who found themselves in this special situation and who confirmed the urgency, or the purchase of the ticket, were able to travel without any problems.

Furthermore, this Consulate General reiterates that all emails received are duly responded to and all telephone calls are answered (all telephone numbers are provided on the Consulate's website as well as the emergency number, active 24 hours a day, 7 days a day). week) and, therefore, asks the authors of this article to provide evidence of the “questions sent by email” that were not answered by this Consulate and the calls that were not answered.

Finally, we ask that this note be published in response to the article on January 15th, to provide the necessary clarifications to the Italian Community of Rio Grande do Sul.

Best regards,

Roberto Bortot
Consul General of Italy in Porto Alegre
