Member of Parliament Federica Onori, from the Azione party, asked the Italian government for a statement on the progress of talks with Spain regarding a dual citizenship agreement. The request was made during a question and answer session in the Chamber's Foreign Affairs Committee.
Today, The Italian community in Spain numbers 325 people..
“We asked the government for an update on the negotiation process. Currently, to become a naturalized citizen in Spain, one must renounce their original citizenship, with some exceptions, such as in the case of France,” the parliamentarian stated.
According to Onori, she has been working in Parliament for almost two years on initiatives such as motions, resolutions, and questions to advance the bilateral agreement with Spain. The goal is to guarantee Italian citizens living in the Iberian country the possibility of maintaining their Italian citizenship while acquiring Spanish citizenship.
“We wanted to hear more concrete results regarding the time horizon, but we recognize the work that the government has been doing, including in the latest talks with the Spanish government,” he stated.
The MP stressed that it is essential to build relations based on the principle of reciprocity. “We believe it is appropriate for the Spanish government to review its legislation on this matter. This way, Italian citizens can feel integrated into the country where they live and to whose development they contribute, within a broader vision of European citizenship.”
Onori also recalled his role in the IV Italy-Spain Forum, held in October 2024. On that occasion, a joint declaration was adopted by the delegations to urge both governments to expedite negotiations on the subject.
"From the Parliament's side, we have done and will continue to do everything possible. We will not stop demanding concrete actions," he concluded.
