The Italian Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro will resume processing applications for Italian citizenship starting June 16, 2025. jure sanguinis.
According to the Consulate, applicants who made an appointment until 23:59 pm on March 27, 2025 will be served based on the previous rules. These people will have their process evaluated in accordance with the legislation in force at the time.
For other cases, the criteria are as follows:
All those who make new appointments through the Prenot@mi portal, from June 16, 2025, must appear on the scheduled date with proof of appointment in hand.
Anyone who had scheduled an appointment between March 31 and June 13, 2025 will receive an email with a new appointment. This message will replace the old appointment and must be presented at the appointment.
Waiting list is not equivalent to scheduling
The Consulate makes a clear distinction between being on the waiting list and having an appointment made. Only those who have a valid appointment receipt will be automatically served.
In cases where the applicant was unable to schedule an appointment due to inefficiencies in the consular system, it will be necessary to seek judicial recognition. That is, the applicant must prove in court that, due to the State's fault, they were denied access to the appointment. Thus, they can claim the right to Italian citizenship through a court decision.
The resumption of services is a response to the restructuring imposed by the new legislation, which changes procedures and reinforces control over requests for citizenship by descent.
