Province in the Dolomites region takes action for damage caused by the pandemic
The province of Belluno, in the Veneto region, filed a lawsuit against the Chinese Ministry of Health to request a compensation for damages caused by the new coronavirus pandemic in the tourist sector of the mountain range of Dolomites, in the Italian Alps.
The hearing was scheduled for December 21, 2020 at the Belluno Court.
In the document, the Chinese government is accused of “failing to immediately communicate to the World Health Organization (WHO) the state of the spread of the virus and its serious lethal effects between November and December 2019”, in addition to “not having taken the necessary control measures at airports departing from China”.

“The district suffered the greatest damage in the immediate block of all considered 'pilot projects', including the construction of Cortina d'Ampezzo airport, anticipating the influx of people expected for the 2026 Olympic Games”, says an excerpt from the call signed by lawyer Marco Vignola, from Bari.
In the process, the region asks for compensation for “loss of earnings due to the early closure of all structures in the tourist sector, at the height of the winter ski season”, when the structures were “totally full”.
The Italian lawyer also takes into account the awarding of the World Ski Championships in Cortina in 2021 and anticipates the fact that the venue will host the 2026 Winter Olympics.
“International cultural and sporting events had already been prepared, including the investment of enormous economic resources and organizational aspects of the business network”, adds the text.
According to Belluno's defense, “the early and sudden closure brought disastrous consequences, such as the necessary dismissal of all staff, in addition to the cancellation of contracts with suppliers, of all structures in the 64 municipalities belonging to the district.
