Gigi Proietti, one of Italy's most beloved actors, dies
Gigi Proietti, one of Italy's most beloved theater and film actors, died this Monday (2), on his 80th birthday.
The interpreter was hospitalized due to heart problems and passed away in the early hours of the morning, according to his family's announcement.
Born in Rome, in 1940, Proietti fell in love with theater during his years at law school, which he never completed, and became one of the greatest icons of Italian dramaturgy.
In addition, he starred in almost 50 films, from Ettore Scola's “Speak of Women” (1964) to Matteo Garrone's adaptation of “Pinocchio” (2019). Proietti was also a voice actor and lent his voice to stars such as Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman, Marlon Brando and Sylvester Stallone.
“It is with great pain that I learned the news of the death, on her 80th birthday, of Gigi Proietti. Versatile actor, director, organizer, voice actor, master of generations of actors, he was the genuine expression of the romantic spirit”, says a message written by the President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella.
The head of state added that he will remember Proietti as a “lucid and passionate intellectual, always attentive and sensitive to the most fragile areas and the renewal of society”. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said that the actor was an “extraordinary protagonist” of Italian culture.
“Precisely on his birthday, he leaves us a genius of the show who knew how to entertain and move millions of Italians”, he highlighted.
