A 24-meter-long bicycle that prepares polenta while traveling through the streets will be one of the attractions at the Typical Italian Gastronomy Festival in Nova Veneza, in southern Santa Catarina. The structure, called Polentopeia, involves 35 participants and 17 interconnected carts.
The group comes from Ascurra, in the Itajaí Valley, and transforms the tour into a celebration of Italian culture. A cook stirs polenta along the way, while participants sing traditional songs and a DJ provides entertainment.
The festival takes place between June 18th and 21st and celebrates 135 years of Italian colonization in the municipality. In addition to the giant bicycle parade, the program includes cultural and musical performances and attractions inspired by the Italian customs of the region.
For Ivo Grott, the rider of the giant bicycle, participating in the attraction is a source of joy. “I didn’t even think it would go as far as it’s going, so for me it’s a great joy to be able to bring my family and friends along. We bring a lot of joy wherever we go,” he told ND Mais.
Tradition created in 1996
Created in 1996, Polentopeia was born to celebrate the traditions of Italian descendants in a creative and relaxed way. Over time, it has become a prominent presence at cultural festivals in Santa Catarina.
The members, known as polenta makers, travel to events dressed in yellow. They sing traditional songs and promote a celebration of Italian roots wherever they go.
Programming in Nova Veneza
The pre-event took place on June 13th and 14th in the city center. The public enjoyed free musical performances, the pre-parade of the Carnavale di Venezia, and cultural activities focused on Italian traditions.
Large screens also broadcast the Brazilian National Team's games during the pre-party, which transformed the space into a meeting point for residents and visitors. (With information from ND Mais)
