Italian institutions in São Paulo presented a production of the opera “Gianni Schicchi”, by Giacomo Puccini, which will visit 18 cities in the state as part of the events marking the 700th anniversary of the death of the poet Dante Alighieri (1265-1321).
The preview for guests took place last Monday (13), at the headquarters of the Italian Consulate General in São Paulo, promoter of the initiative alongside the Italian Cultural Institute of the capital of São Paulo.
Staged by São Paulo Opera Company, the play is based on Canto XXX do Inferno from “Divina Comédia”, Dante’s masterpiece, and the first public performance is scheduled for September 15, at the Teatro Sergio Cardoso, in the capital of São Paulo.
In addition to São Paulo, 17 other cities in the state will host the opera in the next almost two months, as part of the project “On the Way to the Interior”, created by the consulate to take Italian art and culture outside the capital.
“The goal of Consulate General is to propose to a public eager to get closer to Italy and that goes beyond the many millions of descendants of Italians, a quality cultural offer, an alternative to the stereotypes with which Italianness is often disseminated”, says a note from the consular headquarters.
