Gabriele Gavina says “something radical” has to be done after what happened at San Siro
The Inter-Naples match, held this Wednesday (26), was marked by serious incidents in Milan. The balance is tragic: one dead, several injured, fights and racist chants. The situation has already motivated the intervention of the president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), stating that a break in the Italian championship to calm tempers is something to be considered. “The problem is one of public order, just like whether to play or not,” said Gabriele Gavina.
“We need something radical, this match had to be a party and I saw unacceptable things. I'm worried about this climate. At the San Siro I saw players who were too nervous and what happened outside the stadium was too serious. We will speak to the government and the Olympic Committee today and a decision will be made soon”, said the leader.
Just yesterday, Milan police chief Marcello Cardona explained in a press conference that, before the start of the game, a van in which Napoli fans were traveling was attacked by around a hundred Inter fans.
Napoli fans got out of the vehicle and a fight broke out in which two people were slightly injured by a sharp weapon. Amid the turmoil, the fan ended up being run over and later taken to the hospital in serious condition. This Thursday he died.
During the match, defender Koulibaly was the target of racist insults. Monkey sounds and insults directed at the Senegalese could be heard from the first minutes of the match. At least three times, the stadium's sound system asked for the singing to stop – even at the risk of penalty for Inter Milan. In vain.
The player ended up being sent off, something that his coach Carlo Ancelotti sees as a consequence of the pressure he was subjected to.
“There was a strange atmosphere today, I asked the referee three times for the match to be suspended, there were three announcements on the loudspeaker. Koulibaly was certainly irritated. He is normally very calm and professional, but he heard monkey sounds throughout the entire match,” the coach complained.
The coach said he asked referee Paolo Mazzoleni numerous times for the game to be stopped. But he was not heard.
“Next time, we might have to leave the field,” he said at the post-match press conference.

“I apologize for the defeat and, above all, for letting my teammates down. But I'm proud of the color of my skin. Of being French, Senegalese, Neapolitan: man.”
Inter Milan beat Napoli 1-0.
