Descendants of Italians in several countries are signing a petition against the Tajani Decree-Law, which proposes changes in the recognition of Italian citizenship by descent. The initiative reached 29 thousand signatures in one day — and continues going strong.
The document is addressed to the Italian government, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Fratelli d'Italia party. The signatories claim that the decree threatens the right to citizenship by blood, a principle known as jus sanguinis.
According to the organizers, the measure breaks with a historical tradition. Over the course of more than a century, millions of Italians have migrated and formed a large diaspora. Today, their descendants maintain ties with their country of origin and spread their culture throughout the world.
The petition presents three main criticisms of the decree:
- Disregards the role of the diaspora in Italy's history;
- Restricts the jus sanguinis;
- It weakens descendants as cultural representatives abroad.

The movement proposes:
- Immediate withdrawal of the decree;
- Recognition of overseas communities as part of the nation;
- Improvement in consular services, with greater agility in citizenship processes.
The movement invites Italians and supporters to sign the petition. “Depriving descendants of citizenship means denying their role in the prestige of Italy,” the text states.
