Grocery shopping has become a problem for many Italians: recent price increases have put hundreds of families to the test, who find themselves tightening their belts even for basic needs.
It is for them that the solidarity supermarket was born, a reality that is slowly spreading throughout Italy, to meet the needs of those who cannot put a hot dish on the table every day.
O Solidarity Emporium It has just opened its doors in Cassino, a small town in the province of Frosinone – 75 kilometers southeast of Rome.
Opened on Friday, April 14, 2023, it is a supermarket where you can do your shopping for free, as long as you have the special card distributed by the local Department of Social Action.
On its shelves are food products that would be wasted, surplus or donated, thus having a second life. The objective, therefore, is not only to help those in need, but also to encourage the recovery of food that would otherwise be thrown away.
O Solidarity Emporium It looks like a normal supermarket, with shelves full of all kinds of food. But how does it work? It can be accessed by special card holders provided by the municipality, in which points are credited monthly according to the real needs of your family.
These points can be used to buy “sale” products on the market: this way, anyone who needs financial help can shop for free, spending points instead of money.
