Robert Menia, Italian party senator Brothers of Italy, reiterated his opinion against the ease of recognition of Italian citizenship for Brazilians.
during the panel “Italianity Abroad, a Heritage for Europe and the World”, held in Pescara, Abruzzo, this Saturday (27), Menia alleged that applications for citizenship by Italian-Brazilians are at disproportionate levels and defended measures to contain this flow.
Menia is the author of bill number 752The bill, presented in February of this year, aims to change the rules for obtaining Italian citizenship. Among the main proposals are the requirement of proficiency in the Italian language (level B1) and a one-year residency requirement in Italy for descendants up to the third degree.
Suspicious motives
During his speech, the senator claimed that many Italian-Brazilians seek citizenship for opportunistic motives, aiming for advantages such as access to the European Union and social benefits.
“The reconquest of citizenship in this region of the world is occurring in disproportionate numbers—something that is reported to us by the mayors of many municipalities, from Molise to Veneto, for example—mayors who receive thousands of requests for recognition of Italian citizenship. What happens is that someone in Brazil, or in Argentina, six generations later, even knowing little about where they come from, asks to obtain this recognition. Why? Because it's convenient,” said the senator, responsible for the department. Italians in the world, or Italians in the World (yes, the fox keeps the henhouse).
Menia also blamed the existence of offices in Brazil that, according to him, sell consulting services irregularly for obtaining Italian citizenship, through falsified documents, collusion with corrupt officials, and other illegal practices.
“In Brazil, for example, there are even agencies that promote a 'Black Friday' for Italian citizenship, practically selling it, providing fraudulent documents, or basing themselves on fictitious residences, or making spurious agreements with corrupt officials who legitimize the non-existence with falsified genealogical certificates, and so on,” the senator emphasized during his speech.
