The former congresswoman fled Brazil after her conviction, but was captured by Italian authorities. According to a statement from the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Itamaraty), the Brazilian Embassy in Rome was informed of the decision by her lawyers. The case is still subject to appeal within the judicial system.
After all legal appeals have been exhausted, the final decision on extradition will rest with the Italian government. In December 2025, Zambelli resigned from her post after the Supreme Federal Court (STF) upheld the revocation of her mandate.
The former parliamentarian's defense team is attempting to obtain authorization for her to await the remainder of the proceedings in freedom or under house arrest. The lawyers cite health issues to support the request. So far, the defense has not officially commented on the new decision.
