Italians abroad will be able to apply for an electronic identity in Italy from June 2026. The measure, approved this Tuesday (14), provides that citizens registered in the AIRE — Registry of Italians Residents Abroad — obtain the document directly in Italian municipalities.
The decree still needs to be approved by the Senate. But since the government has a majority, approval is considered certain. After this stage, the text will be sent to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for signature.
The electronic identity card will now be accepted as a travel document. When there is a specific impediment to the issuance or use of a passport, a note will be registered restricting the use of the identity card for international travel.
The new rule aims to simplify the lives of Italians living abroad who face obstacles in obtaining documents at consulates, such as long delays and travel.
With this change, the issuance process is expected to be faster and more accessible to those who maintain ties to Italy even while living abroad.
