Giovanni Lopez, 47, died after choking on a piece of panettone during Christmas lunch with his family in Settimo Torinese. in Piedmont, northern Italy.
The tragedy occurred at Giovanni's parents' house, where the family was celebrating their traditional Christmas Eve meal. The atmosphere was festive, with the table set, toasts, and smiles. Everything changed in seconds.
Lunch was almost over when the panettone was served along with fruit. Giovanni put a piece in his mouth and then began to choke. A segment of tangerine also made it difficult for him to breathe. The shock turned to despair. He could no longer breathe.
Family members tried to help, but were unable to clear his airways. Emergency services were called. Medical teams arrived quickly at the residence on Via Foglizzo, but the man had already lost consciousness. Resuscitation attempts lasted several minutes. Giovanni did not survive. Death was confirmed at the scene. The cause was classified as accidental.
The victim's brother, Domenico Lopez, published a heartfelt message. Facebook"You were pure, generous, and good, even too good. You always thought of others and never of yourself. I hope the Lord is good to you and that you have departed for a better life. I love you, my brother."
Giovanni's cousin, Marianna, also paid tribute to her relative. "There will always be a place in our hearts for our dear Giovanni. I loved him in his earthly life and I will love him now in the kingdom of God."
The community of Borgo Nuovo, where the family is well-known, expressed its support and condolences. The funeral will be held on the afternoon of Wednesday, December 27th, at the parish of Santa Maria in Settimo Torinese.
The city was overcome with emotion. The gathering that should have marked another family Christmas ended in silence and tears. What was meant to be remembered with joy will forever be remembered as the day Giovanni left, without warning, in the middle of the celebration.
