The government of the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, reached this Tuesday (12) the mark of 1.025 days in power, becoming the fourth longest-lasting in the country's republican history. The administration began on October 22, 2022 and surpassed that of the former prime minister Matteo Renzi, which lasted 1.024 days.

Meloni celebrated the achievement on social media, saying it was “one more reason to continue working with seriousness and determination.”

For part of the Italian community abroad, however, the feeling is far less festive. After all, it was under his government that the so-called "evil package" was implemented, a set of measures that raised taxes and created stricter laws For those who wish to have their Italian citizenship recognized.

Record duration

The longest-serving Executive continues to be the second government of Silvio Berlusconi, which remained in power for 1.412 days, between June 2001 and April 2005. In second place comes Berlusconi's own fourth government (1.287 days) and, in third, that of Bettino Craxi (1.093 days).

If he completes his term in 2027, Meloni could surpass everyone and take the top spot in the rankings. For some, this would be a historic milestone. For others—especially those who have seen consular fees skyrocket and citizenship procedures become an obstacle course—it would simply be the extension of a difficult period.
