Veneto region governor Luca Zaia thanked Italian President Sergio Mattarella for his “sensitivity” in visiting the Veneto region’s areas. Rio Grande do Sul affected by floods.
The politician commented that the Brazilian state “is a small Veneto on the other side of the world” and analyzed that the president’s departure is also a “recognition of the history” of the Italian region.
“Brazil, and Rio Grande do Sul in particular, were and still are lands where the great epic of Venetian immigration unfolded over the decades. For this reason, I express special gratitude to the president who, demonstrating great sensitivity and deep knowledge of migratory phenomena, will greet and embrace the inhabitants, the majority of whom, generation after generation, are of Venetian origin and lived through the drama of the flood”, said Zaia.
“Good people, who brought, and still represent, the best values of the population of Veneto: seriousness, honesty, respect and willingness to work and contribute to the development of the lands that welcomed them, preserving their identity and traditions”, he added.
At the end of May, Italy sent 30 tons of humanitarian material to Rio Grande do Sul to help families who lost everything in the floods. The aid took off from the UN humanitarian aid base in Brindisi and landed at the military airport in Canoas
Mattarella's presence is a way of renewing Italy's message of solidarity and friendship towards Brazil, an action for which President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva thanked the European country. (HANDLE)
