The Italian ambassador to Brazil, Alessandro Cortese, inaugurated the exhibition “Oltreocean.
150 years of Italian-Brazilian art".
The opening of the exhibition, which took place during the 150th anniversary of Italian immigration to Brazil, was attended by more than 300 people.
Among the dozens of works exhibited in the space are works by several iconic artists such as Alfredo Volpi, Eliseu Visconti, Giorgio Ceschiatti and Anita Malfatti.
However, the four panels by Candido Portinari, which are from the collection of the Italian Embassy, are the main highlights of the event. The works, commissioned in the 1930s by the then ambassador in Rio de Janeiro, are on display for the first time to the public.
“This exhibition, in addition to having a very high level of artistic value, above all has a very important symbolic and historical meaning.
It is concrete proof of how Italian immigration influenced Brazilian culture, as well as many other sectors, from economics to politics, science and society in general”, said Cortese.
“The title 'Oltreoceano' evokes the hope of a better life, which moved the millions of immigrants who, since the end of the 19th century, decided to leave their affections and places of origin, in search of a new land where they could restart their lives” , he added.
The exhibition in Brasília, which is organized by the Italian Embassy in collaboration with the Brazil-Italy Mixed Parliamentary Front, will remain open to the public every day, free of charge, until July 14th. (HANDLE)
