Only two of the eight members of parliament elected to represent Italians abroad voted in favor of extending the deadline for citizenship for minors.
The vote took place this Monday (23), in the Italian Chamber of Deputies.
The approved bill extends until May 31, 2029, the deadline for parents to declare their intention to exercise citizenship benefits for their minor children. This measure is part of the Milleproroghe decree.
Among the parliamentarians representing foreign affairs, the votes in favor came from Simone Billi (Lega-FI-FDI), from the European division, and Franco Tirelli (MAIE), elected by South America.
The other six representatives had differing positions or were absent.
Christian Diego Di Sanzo (PD), from North and Central America, voted against the proposal. Federica Onori (M5S), from Europe, was on an official mission and did not vote.
Four deputies did not participate in the session: Nicola Carè (PD), Andrea Di Giuseppe (Lega-FI-FDI), Fabio Porta (PD), and Toni Ricciardi (PD). Fabio Porta is one of the two representatives from South America in the House.
In the overall result, the final roll-call vote registered 154 votes in favor and 64 against. Earlier, in a vote of confidence on the text, the government obtained 177 votes in favor and 93 against.
The matter now goes to the Senate, where the decree must be converted into law by March 1st.
Extending the deadline is considered vital for families who are unable to schedule appointments at consulates. Without the new deadline, the benefit would end in May 2026.
