On November 26th and 27th, the University of Padua, in the city of Padua, in Veneto, will host the International Congress “150 years of Italian immigration in Brazil: production and circulation of knowledge”.
The event, held by the Department of Linguistic and Literary Studies of the University of Padua (or, Università degli Studi di Padova) will bring together experts to discuss the historical, cultural and artistic impacts of Italian immigration in Brazil.
The congress will feature a plenary session by historian Emilio Franzina, from University of Verona, on the 27th, with the theme: “Brazilians of Italian origin: Immigration, cultures and imaginaries of a historical process of adaptation” (“Brazilian Italian origin: immigration, culture and imagination in a historical process of adaptation”.
Two days of debates on history, culture and literature
The congress program includes thematic sessions dedicated to various aspects of Italian immigration in Brazil, with contributions from writers, academics and researchers from Italian and Brazilian universities.
November 26st
The opening will feature the inaugural plenary session of Luiz Ruffato, a Brazilian writer of Italian origin. In his presentation, entitled “The Invisibles – Iliadian Immigration in Brazilian Literature”, Ruffato will analyze how the experience of Italian immigrants is portrayed in Brazilian literature.

November 27st
The main plenary will be led by Emilio Franzina, followed by presentations addressing the creation of a unique migrant literature, the role of hybrid languages such as Talian and the artistic and cultural impact of Italian immigration in Brazil.
Central themes: literature, art and citizenship
Migrant literature and new narratives
The event explores how authors of Italian origin in Brazil helped shape a new literature, including the works of Eduardo Dall'Alba and the parodies of Joanim Pepperoni, which reinterpret myths of immigration in Serra Gaúcha.

Art and culture as instruments of dialogue
In addition to literature, the congress examines Italian influence on Brazilian visual arts, cinema, and music, with a focus on the works of... Aldo Locatelli and movies like America e The Quadrillo.
Italian citizenship as a current issue
One of the most anticipated moments will be the debate on Italian citizenship for descendants, led by Vincenzo During, from the University of Padova. The topic will be discussed from practical and legal perspectives, addressing the challenges faced by the new generations.
An event for scholars and enthusiasts
The congress, open to the public, will take place at Hall of the Edicoles, in Piazza Capitaniato, Padova.
