Do you think that it is only Brazilians who dream of dual nationalityThe Swiss also want a second passport.
Between 2010 and 2019, the proportion of Swiss adults with two passports increased from 14% to 19%, data from the Swiss Federal Statistical Office.
Just under a million Swiss adults (over 15 years old) had dual nationality in 2019, compared to 700.000 in 2010, the body said, according to a publication on the portal Swissinfo.
Of these, 65% obtained their Swiss passport through a naturalization process, while the other 35% were born with it. Italian company it was the second most common citizenship (24% of the total), followed by French (11%), German (9%), then Turkish, Portuguese and Spanish.
Although this represents an increase over the decade, the number of people obtaining citizenship fell in 2019: 41.015 received a Swiss passport that year, representing a 3,2% drop compared to 2018.
And considerably fewer people have received accelerated citizenship, a process available to the spouses of a Swiss citizen and the children of a naturalized immigrant who has lived in the country for five years. The extension of eased rules to third-generation immigrants in February 2018 also did not appear to have an effect: overall accelerated citizenship numbers fell from 9.000 to 6.314.
Geneva has the highest proportion of people with dual nationality, with almost 50% of all residents in the canton holding two passports. In Uri and Appenzell Inner Rhoden only around 5% have this status.
