Taranto sells houses for 1 euro in the historic center. But on one condition

A reason for fun among Italian-Brazilian groups, houses for just 1 euro are back.

This time, the advertising appeal comes from Taranto, in the region of stunning Puglia (on the heel of the boot).

The city council launched a project to sell houses historical Center, on the island, for just one euro – around R$ 6,40 – as a way of repopulation of the Italian region.

According to the document, all interested parties, such as companies, agencies or citizens, have until November 20th to present their proposals.

“One euro is a symbolic contribution to a historic objective: to repopulate the Old Town, our Isola Madre after decades,” said Taranto Mayor Rinaldi Melucci.

Located at southern Italy, Isola Madre dates back to an ancient settlement built between two seas, founded in 706 BC. The region was destroyed more than a millennium later, but was rebuilt in 927 by the Byzantine emperor Nicephorus II Phokas, with the help of Greek architects.

With its narrow streets, “the charm of Taranto and its history have already proven to be a powerful attraction”, added Melucci, highlighting the interest “from all over the world”.

According to the city hall, investors from the United States, Russia, China and Australia have expressed interest in investing in the city.

The municipality will make a list of proposals and, subsequently, evaluate all candidates according to three main parameters: eco-sustainability; project destination; and sponsorship contract.

The conditions

To buy a property in the historic center of Taranto for 1 euro, the interested party you need to transfer your residence there or transform the property into a holiday home

Restoration work must begin within 1 year of purchase, and purchased homes cannot be resold.

And they really exist

Although it may seem like just a marketing ploy, the houses actually exist and are of interest to thousands of people.

At the beginning of 2019, the city of Sambuca di Sicilia, in southern Italy, received more than 40 thousand emails with requests for information about your offer to sell houses for the symbolic value of one euro.
