This Saturday (30), at 16 pm, Amarela House, in Vila Romana, São Paulo, will be the stage for a special meeting to celebrate and discuss the 150 years of Italian immigration in Brazil.

Promoted by the Language, Identity and Memory Research Group (Glim), linked to the Department of Modern Letters of the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences (FFLCH) of USP, the event highlights the importance of preserving Italian history and culture in the country.

The initiative is carried out in partnership with Janice de Piero, artist and art educator responsible for Amarela House.

At the event, residents of the neighborhood — especially those descended from Italian immigrants — will be invited to learn about Glim and collaborate with the work developed by the group, coordinated by the professor Elizabeth Santoro, from FFLCH.

“Its purpose is to gather and record the material memory (documents, photos, diaries) and immaterial memory (spoken language, memory, stories) of Italian immigrants in Brazil and their descendants. Oral accounts of Italians and descendants in Brazil are recorded, with a view to establishing direct contact with the discursive construction of Italian identity, with memory and stories,” the group highlights.

Living history in the heart of the Roman Village

The choice of Casa Amarela to host the event is no coincidence. Built in 1921 by Italian immigrant Angelo de Bortoli, Janice's great-grandfather, the house is a landmark of Italian immigration in Sao Paulo.

Fallen by the Conpresp, the space is now a cultural center that preserves and promotes the history and art of the region.

Since 2013, Casa Amarela has hosted exhibitions, lectures and cultural activities, reinforcing its role as a symbol of the memory of Italian community in the capital of São Paulo.

The event marks not only a moment of reflection on the past, but also of engagement for the future, strengthening the connection between generations and valuing the legacy of those who helped build the history of Brazil.
