Agreement to set up a consulate in Florianópolis depends on approval by the Legislative Assembly
Governor Carlos Moisés da Silva (PSL) is expected to uphold the agreement made by his predecessor, Eduardo Pinho Moreira (MDB), to establish an Italian Consulate in Florianópolis.
However, authorization will be given by the current Legislative Assembly of Santa Catarina, which should return to the matter in February, said the governor's press office, who had an appointment in Brasilia this Thursday, in response to Italianismo.
A historic demand of the Italian community in Santa Catarina, the consular unit was promised by the former governor who signaled at the end of his term the transfer of the available space in the State Administrative Center, in the Saco Grande neighborhood.
At the beginning of December, the advisor to the Italian-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Santa Catarina, Diego Mezzogiorno – who has been working for the implementation of the consulate for four years – said that the beginning of bureaucratic procedures between the two countries had begun, and the forecast of opening was three to six months.
It is estimated that Santa Catarina has around 3 million descendants of Italians, almost half of its population.
