European legislation will require all new vehicles sold from July 6th to be equipped with Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA), an intelligent speed assistant.
The measure is to prevent drivers from exceeding speed limits and being fined, especially in Italy, the country of the speeding ticket industry.
It is the first step towards an automatic system that European Union intends to make it mandatory and that only the pressure exerted by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) prevented it from happening.
The impossibility of exceeding speed limits would make it uninteresting to have more powerful vehicles on the market, the majority of which are German.
Brussels, through the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), states that ISA can reduce collisions by 30% and deaths due to road accidents by 20%, if used.
ISA identifies the maximum speed allowed in each location, with the help of the camera and GPS positioning, a system that also accurately calculates the speed traveled by the vehicle. Whenever the limit is exceeded, ISA restricts the engine's performance in order to respect the limit.
To perform a maneuver or complete an overtake, the system allows the authorized speed in the location to be exceeded momentarily.
