After “a day of madness”, in the words of the center-left leader, Enrico Letta, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi presented his resignation to the President this Thursday (21).
Exactly a week after he did it for the first time, when Sergio Mattarella rejected it and convinced him to go to Parliament to “clarify” the political situation.
After a turbulent week, the coalition that supported this “national unity” government is buried.
“The only way to move forward if we want to remain together is to rebuild a new government pact with courage, altruism and credibility,” Draghi told senators.
“Are you ready? They don’t owe this answer to me, but to all Italians”, he added “Super Mario“, as it is known, remembering that “Italy is strong when it is united”.
The former president of the European Central Bank was called in February 2021 to lead a government of national unity with all parties – the exception being the Fratelli d'Italia (Brothers of Italy), of Giorgia Meloni, far-right.
The end of the unity Executive could, above all, benefit Meloni's coalition, which according to polls would comfortably win the early elections, considered for the first or second week of October.
