The 12th edition of the event celebrates Italian Republic Day, celebrated on June 2
Sunday (1st/7), the capital hosts the Traditional Italian Festival, which will involve around 90 restaurants. Typical dishes, wines, music and typical dances are expected to attract 40 to 60 people, according to the organizers.
The 12th edition of the event celebrates the Italian Republic Day, celebrated on June 2. For about 10 hours, the party will take place in the heart of Savassi. “Every year, our audience grows. Now we will occupy another block. It is a beautiful, happy party for the family. The people of Minas Gerais love Italy and identify with our culture. They are a very Italian people in their way of being”, says Giorgio Collina, vice-president of the Italian-Brazilian Cultural Association (Acibra-MG). According to him, there are 1,5 million descendants of Italians in Brazil.
“The history of Belo Horizonte has many chapters starring Italians and their descendants. Many of them came to build the new capital, and these families ended up putting down roots here. The festival is a way to honor them, to recapture a bit of that history through the food that our grandparents ate, the drinks they drank, and the music they listened to,” says Collina.
The novelty is the beer created especially for the occasion. The production of the drink brought together two master brewers: the Italian Alessio Selvaggio, from the Croce di Malto brewery, located in Trecate, 40 kilometers from Milan, and Sandro Duarte, from the mining company Backer.
Another new feature will be the draw for a round-trip ticket to Venice. To compete, simply donate 1kg of non-perishable food at the entrance to the party.
The music will be provided by the Italian tenor duo Claudio Mattioli and Massimiliano Barbolini, influenced, of course, by their compatriot Luciano Pavarotti. Also performing will be the group Taratolato, singers Paola Giannini and Sonia Gargiulo, and Donato Riccio.
MENU At the stalls, the restaurants promise to combine flavor and tradition. One of them is Anella, which serves special homemade pastas and artisanal sauces with exclusive recipes.
The fusilli with braciola, for example, comes with sugo sauce and stuffed ham. The spaghetti with mignonnette features slices of filet mignon sautéed in butter and red sauce. Another option at Anella is the San Gennaro carpaccio. Prices range from R$20 to R$40. The bistro will sell Italian wines for R$50 to R$60.
