The best ice cream shops were evaluated with a score ranging from zero to three cones
The traditional Gambero Rosso, which chooses the best Italian restaurants, launched a guide with the best ice cream shops in Italy in 2018. Instead of the traditional stars, the brands were classified on a scale ranging from one to three cones of “gelato”.
In the guide Gelaterie d'Italia 2018 there are 40 ice cream shops in Italy that received the maximum score, that is, “three coni” (three cones). In Italy there are almost 40 thousand ice cream shops, but the 2018 guide includes less than 300, which were evaluated with a score ranging from zero to three cones, according to the level of excellence achieved by them.
The region that registered the most ice cream shops with three cones is Emilia-Romagna, which obtained seven highlights, followed by Lombardy and Piedmont, with six, and Lazio and Tuscany, which have 5 nominations. The most famous cities Rome (3), Milan (2) and Florence (2) each had seven companies with the maximum score.
Gambero Rosso also awarded some special places. The “Best Chocolate Ice Cream” award went to Stefano Dassie, from Treviso. Nicolò Arietti from Gelati d'Antan, from Turin, won the Emerging Gelatiere award.
Stefano Roccamo, from Stefino from Bologna is the one who won the award for best sustainable gelato. He brought to life a completely natural and certified organic ice cream. Just the first step towards a product and a system that was mostly healthy and ethical. Stefano Roccamo's is a 360-degree ecological gelateria: a precise system recovers the cooling water from the refrigerator and wells, the packaging is completely biodegradable, the products are free of gluten, hydrogenated fats, emulsifiers, stabilizers, synthetic flavors and colorings and artificial.
To choose the best, the experts used criteria ranging from the analysis of the location, cleanliness, service, the accuracy of the information given, the variety of flavors, the origin of the raw materials to the effect that ice cream has on our five senses. The guide Gelaterie d'Italia del Gambero Rosso 2018, with 240 pages is on sale for €7,60 (buy on line).
