Damage was estimated at 2 million euros
Italian police in the Puglia region are investigating an attack against two wine cooperatives. They were broken into and their tanks were opened. More than 4 million liters of wine and must were released, causing damage estimated at 2 million euros – around R$9,2 million.
Antica Cantina, based in the city of San Severo, and Cantine Padre Pio, located in neighboring Torremaggiore, were victims of sabotage. The crime took place at the end of October last year. The police are still looking for the criminals.
Uma das hypotheses is that the wineries have been target of retaliation for grape pricing policies, creating a unfair competition between winemakers in the province of Foggia.
"We are facing a truly sad event of unprecedented seriousness, as well as an act of absolute cowardice perpetrated against workers and producers in our region. This episode is a terrible blow to our economy”, said Francesco Miglio, mayor of San Severo.
