A Ladder of the Turks (Scala dei Turchi), in Realmonte, southern Sicily, Italy, was “shamefully vandalized” on Friday night. Police are searching for the perpetrators of the attack.
The tourist spot – one of the most visited in Italy – was painted with red powder.
The first site inspections show that the material used was red iron oxide powder, an element that is easy to eliminate.
Several volunteers came together to carry out the record cleaning and return the Turks' Staircase to white.
“The splendid white stone cliff of the Scala dei Turchi, an Agrigento area attraction for visitors from all over the world, has been shamefully vandalized. We condemn the authors of this cowardly gesture. It constitutes an outrage not only to an asset of rare beauty, but also to the image of our island. I hope the authorities quickly identify those responsible,” he said. In the Musumeci, president of Sicilia.
In 2019 the Ladder of the Turks was submitted as a candidate for the UNESCO world heritage.
