The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, said this Thursday (9) that the controversies surrounding the statements of Elon Musk These things happen because the billionaire "is not left-wing." The statement was made during an annual press conference in Rome.
Meloni, leader of the Fratelli d'Italia party, defended Musk's right to freedom of expression. She rejected the idea that the businessman's comments on the social network X amounted to “dangerous interference” in global politics.
“The problem arises when wealthy people use resources to finance parties and associations around the world, influencing the political choices of nation states. This is not the case with Musk,” said Meloni.
Elon Musk, close to US President-elect Donald Trump, has generated controversy in Europe by criticizing leaders such as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Comparisons with Soros
Meloni took the opportunity to criticize the billionaire George Soros, accusing him of interfering in the sovereignty of countries by financing organizations and political parties.
“While Musk has funded campaigns in his own country, Soros uses his fortune to influence political decisions in several nations. Now that is dangerous,” he alleged.
Soros, founder of the Open Society Foundations, is a well-known advocate for liberal causes.
Hypocrisy and attacks
The Italian prime minister also questioned the “hypocrisy” of criticism of Musk’s support for right-wing parties, such as the Alternative for Germany (AfD). According to her, German politicians directly interfered in the 2022 Italian elections without causing the same reaction.
Meloni, who called Musk a “genius,” denied that his administration is close to striking a cybersecurity deal with SpaceX.
