The Italian community, Brazilian football and sports lovers were in mourning this Thursday (16) with the sad news of the death of Antero Greco, at 69 years old.
One of the most respected and renowned sports commentators in the country, Greco left a legacy in his career of more than three decades at ESPN Brasil, where he became an iconic figure on the program “SportsCenter".
Born in the heart of São Paulo, in the Bom Retiro neighborhood, Antero Greco brought with him not only a fervor for football, but also the roots of his Italian parents, Giovanni Greco e Ernestina Ferraro. Antero was a fan of Rome - one Romanist as he used to say to his friends.
His passion for sport has led him to become one of the most recognizable and respected voices on the Brazilian sporting scene, having actively participated in the coverage of major sporting events and broadcast unforgettable games to millions of viewers.
However, the battle against a brain tumor, diagnosed in June 2022, brought a challenge that Antero faced with courage and determination. Even though he was away from his activities at ESPN for a few months, he never left aside his passion for the sport and his commitment to offering in-depth and pertinent analyzes about the world of football.
Alongside his long-time friend, Paulo Soares, “Amigão”, Antero Greco captivated the public with his unique style and his ability to bring insights insightful for sports discussions. His striking voice and unparalleled charisma made him a beloved and respected presence among colleagues, fans and athletes.
In addition to his work at ESPN, Antero Greco also left his mark as a columnist for the newspaper The State of S. Paul, contributing to the enrichment of the sporting debate in the country. His commitment to journalistic ethics and his ability to transmit information clearly and objectively made him a reference in Brazilian sports journalism.
The death of Antero Greco leaves an irreparable void in the national sporting scene.
