Italian singer Toni Santagata, one of the most popular artists of the 1970s and 1980s, died suddenly this Sunday (5), aged 85, his wife Giovanna told ANSA.
Born in Sant'Agata di Puglia, on December 9, 1935, the Italian was baptized as Antonio Morese, but he was successful with the stage name 'Santagata' and taking Apulian folklore around the world, with songs like “Quant'è bello lu primm'ammore” and “Lu maritiello”.

Besides being a singer, he was a composer, radio and TV presenter, and one of Rome's leading comedians, starring in numerous broadcasts at the time.
Over the course of his career, Santagata wrote six modern musical works. Among the most famous are “Padre Pio Santo da Esperança”, presented at the Vatican, in the Paul VI Room, on the night of the saint’s canonization. The last song, “Padre Pio, I need you”, became the official prayer of the faithful. (Handle)
