The audience of 'Supreme Court of Cassation' in Rome, Italy, which will decide this Tuesday (12) on the Great Naturalization thesis, will be marked by protests in front of the Palace of Justice, the building where the meeting will be held.
According to information obtained by the Italianism portalInitially, 50 Brazilians who are in the Lazio region and whose administrative processes for recognition of Italian citizenship have been interrupted will participate in the movement.
In January this year, the Ministry of the Interior sent a circular to Italian municipalities advising that the processes be stopped until the decision of the Italian Supreme Court next Tuesday.
It is worth remembering that, if the decision in '”Supreme Court of Cassation” is unfavorable, that is, it makes the Great Naturalization thesis prevail, it is estimated that approximately 5 to 6 million Italian-Brazilians will be affected.
The whole controversy began when the Italian Public Prosecutor's Office, through the "Avvocatura dello Stato" (State Advocacy), started delaying Italian citizenship "iuris sanguinis" processes based on a decree from the Brazilian government dated November 15, 1889.
According to the decree, all Italian immigrants in Brazil would have been naturalized Brazilians, which would invalidate the Italian ancestry of their grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and so on, also invalidating the Italian citizenship processes. This thesis became known as the Grand Naturalization.
Since the beginning of the controversy, several politicians in Italy and Brazil have been fighting for the rights of Italian-Brazilians. To put a definitive end to the controversy, a hearing was scheduled at the Palace of Justice on July 12th. The hearing takes place at 10am (5am Brasília time).
